Andrew Cormack joined UKERNA in 1999 to run JANET CERT and the EuroCERT pilot. In 2004 he moved to the role of Janet's Chief Regulatory Advisor, responsible for regulatory, policy and security issues of the services Janet offers. Protecting valuable research data
It's hard to think of any other network that has such diverse requirements as a university. Students in their living rooms expect equivalent openness to a domestic broadband connection: in another building researchers need to work at the same security as in a company, hospital or government department. Treating this as a single security zone is bound to fail. Examples exist within universities of all the required technical, organisational and behavioural security measures, proving that they are compatible with academic lifestyles.
